Hope is… La decepcion

Esperanza and her family left Guatemala because they were afraid for their lives. They were looking for a better life for their family. ”If I knew, even a little bit, of the danger,” Esperanza said, “I wouldn’t have tried. Our lives are still at risk, and now we owe all our family so much. Now we are in a worse situation than before we left.”
When Esperanza first came to the United States, she thought everyone wanted to take advantage of her. She thought that every time someone helped the family they would expect something in return.
“She is learning,” said her translator, “that in this town, all we expect is a thank you.”
