LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FUTURE

Centennial 1911 – 2011

Vergas United Methodist church was incorporated on February 25, 1911, with the first trustees being James Nesbitt, Otis Antonsen, E. L. Brooks, Bernard Stangenes and Frank G. Smith.  Our mission: To continually build and nurture a growing Christian community of all ages, through faith, development, worship and fellowship; and making disciples of Jesus Christ.

The church building was originally built in 1886, and was located in Pelican Rapids, it was purchased by Vergas in 1911 and was moved in sections by horse-drawn logging sleds across the frozen lakes, to its present site, in 1912.

Many improvements were made to the church during the last 100 years with the biggest changes being additions onto the church, to accommodate it’s growing membership.

On June 11, 2001, lightning struck the steeple of the church, with half of its cone-shaped roof being blown off, and damage done to the church interior. In August 2001, work was started on a new addition, which included a fellowship hall, handicap accessible restroom, and office, with complete redecorating inside the church and replacement of the Steeple.  In 2007 a new larger entry was added to the front of the church, and it included another restroom, pastor’s office and front access to the basement.

A ladies aid was formed in the early 1900’s. In later years it was known as the Women’s Society of Christian Service (WSCS).  In 1972 they became the United Methodist Women (UMW), and they continue to be a strong group in the church, contributing to many different missions.

A Sunday School was organized early on and has grown through the years. A church choir was formed in 1938, there is a Men’s group, Confirmation & Campership programs also active within the church.

Vergas UMC is a vital, warm and inviting congregation, looking forward to the future, with many years celebrated in the past.
